A handsome antique chest with a hidden workspace. Four large drawers provide everyday storage, while the secretaire drawer opens to reveal fitted compartments, two small interior drawers, and a plum fabric inset bordered in figured maple—an inviting spot for handwritten letters or a favorite journal.
Estimated to date to the 1870s–1880s and approximately 140–155 years old, this Victorian Eastlake chest features richly figured burl walnut fronts, Knapp (pin-and-cove) drawer joinery consistent with late-19th-century manufacture, ornate brass bail pulls, and brass casters. A pierced gallery with carved sunburst panels crowns the chest, complemented by incised floral and geometric designs, reeded uprights, scalloped trim, and wheel-pattern fretwork supports.
In the 19th-century home, secretaire chests combined everyday storage with a place for correspondence and household accounts. Compartments organized letters and stationery, while a lockable desk section kept personal papers secured. This piece retains that practical appeal for a bedroom, living room, or study.
A side locking bar secures the chest, while the desk compartment has its own separate lock. Both have been tested and work. Original key included.
