A sculptural Made in America Federal eagle convex mirror with real decorative presence — produced by the AJ Olson Company of Winona, Mississippi as a high-quality reproduction of the 19th-century convex mirrors that once hung in early American parlors, halls, and stately drawing rooms.

This example features a convex mirror plate surrounded by the iconic thirteen gilded balls, symbolizing the original 13 colonies and a unified nation. The frame is wood with gesso overlay and a warm gilt finish that visually echoes period gold leaf. The pronounced eagle crest and acanthus leaf flourishes reflect the patriotic neoclassicism that defined Federal design and later enjoyed a revival during the early-mid 20th century.

Many surviving eagle mirrors are lightweight, resin-based, or flat-glazed. This one is heavier, more dimensional, and closer to the way early convex mirrors were constructed, which makes it highly desirable for decorators seeking substance and heritage rather than novelty decor.

Condition & Authentic Aging:
— Light silvering specks on the convex glass (subtle, period-appropriate)
— Mild craquelure/cracking in the gilt gesso finish (common and sought-after)
— Original paper backing with factory hang tags and instructions still in place
— Fitted with a wire and ready to hang

Where it belongs in a home:
• Over a mantel to add architecture and symbolism
• In entryways or halls to reflect natural light
• Above console tables for a polished, collected look
• Paired with blue & white porcelain for a coastal-traditional mix
• In libraries or studies for a sense of history and Americana
• In modern interiors as a historical counterpoint (designers do this constantly)

As decorators continue leaning into nostalgic American traditionalism, convex eagle mirrors have become noticeably harder to source, especially in clean, intact condition from domestic makers. This scarcity has moved the category firmly into high-value territory across both retail and secondary marketplaces.
