Vintage Federal Eagle Convex Giltwood Mirror (37” Tall) — Colonial Revival Wall Mirror, Mid-Century American

There’s a particular kind of warmth that only a traditional room has—the glint of gilt, the glow of lamplight, books, portraits, a touch of brass. This large American eagle convex mirror fits right into that world. It feels settled, storied, and quietly important without trying too hard.
This is a mid-20th century Colonial Revival example of the classic Federal “bullseye” mirror: a carved wood frame crowned with an American eagle, flanked by scrolling ornament, and encircled by 13 turned wood spheres—a symbolic nod to the original thirteen colonies. The convex glass brings that subtle “fish-eye” reflection you see in historic interiors, catching light and movement in a way flat mirrors never do.
It’s a substantial piece at approximately 37 inches tall by 27 inches wide, and it has real presence. Over a mantel, above a foyer console, or anchoring a dining room wall between sconces, it immediately makes a space feel more considered and layered, like it belongs to a home that’s been loved for a long time.
The frame is wood with gesso ornament and a warm gilt finish that reads soft and mellow rather than bright or brassy—more “old library” than new production shine. The mirror has a pleasing heft in the hands, which matches how it looks: solid, traditional, and made to last.
Condition & Quality Details
The mirror has been carefully stabilized for everyday use while retaining its period character. Minor age-related losses to the decorative gesso were addressed, and the surface received a unified gilt finish in keeping with its age and style. The convex glass shows light, age-appropriate silvering, the kind of gentle patina collectors expect from a mid-century convex mirror rather than anything distracting.
On the back, the mirror has been cleanly repapered, and the glass re-set. A sturdy hanging wire is installed so it is truly ready to hang on arrival. The eagle crest and lower decorative element are reinforced with their original screws, lending a reassuring sense of strength when you lift or mount the piece.
How it lives in a home:
Over a fireplace with blue-and-white porcelain and brass candlesticks
In an entryway above a demilune or console, paired with a lamp and silver tray
In a dining room layered with candlelight, crystal, and traditional furniture
It’s the kind of mirror that quietly elevates everything around it—rooted in American history, but perfectly at home in the layered, collected interiors people love right now.
